What if… Luke Skywalker has to take care of the old Lord Fener?

The epic battles of Star Wars belong to the past and Luke Skywalker has to take care of his old dad, Lord Fener. This is the idea of Alice Socal, Italian comic writer. She produces one of the best interesting things I read in 2011.

‘Luke’ is the name of this small book published by Giuda Edizioni, where our hero spend his time taking care of his old, crippled and gruffy dad, Lord Fener. We can follow the ‘epic’ normal life of Luke, trapped into the family that becomes the place that makes everybody unhappy.

The exhibition of ‘Luke’ is in Ravenna, c\o Galleria Mirada. Opening Saturday 8th October, 9:30 pm.

Codroipo (Udine): K - The Art of Living Comix

For the people in the nearby of the Italian city of Udine, there is the next weekend K - The Art of Living Comix. The festival is promoted by Safarà editore, a publishing house, is an opportunity for seeing in which different ways this young art develops nowadays: graphic novel, graphic journalism, sketchcrawling, the Italian Bonelli style.

Just a short and incomplete list of the authors host at K - The Art of Living Comix: Stefano Babini, Franco Devescovi, Davide Pascutti, Andrea Longhi. Opening Friday 7th of June at 8:45 pm. The complete programme here.

Le Sketch #10 goes into augmented reality comics!

Celebrating the tenth issue, Le Sketch decided to cross the paper-digital divide and go Augmented Reality. The sketches in this issue literally pop out and float in space.

You can see unpublished sketches by Jorge Alderete, Matt Madden, Nick Bertozzi, Peter Kuper, Marcellus Hall, Steven Weissman, Craig Atkinson & Matthew Thurber.

Pencil Vs Camera technique is another piece of the experimental art of the Belgian cartoonist Ben Heine. Above, the Atomium in Brussels is under attack.

He explains to Newslite.tv how he came up with this idea:

"It came by coincidence while I was watching television and writing a letter at the same time a few weeks ago. Reading my letter before putting it in the envelope, I saw in transparency the television behind the paper. I then realize it would be great to make something similar in a single image showing 2 different actions."

Ben Heine and the digital circlist painting

Digital Circlism is invented by Ben Heine, Belgian cartoonist, teacher and much more. In 'Leopard' Ben painted each circle on a black surface and he didn't really pay attention to symmetry or details. That makes the outcome one of my favourite Ben's circlist work. Below the making of Leopard.

Each work required a lot of patience and time.

This circlist portrait of Johnny Depp as seen in Tim Burton's movie "Alice in Wonderland" took several days of work. Each colored circle is individually painted on a black surface.

The details of Mad Hatter\Johnny Depp give an idea of the work required.

26th March 2010 is the right day for a crazy act: give a book to a stranger.

Metro, train, bus. Take courage with your neighbor, look into his eyes, break the silence and give a book to him.

This is the initiative of Alberto Schiariti, 21 year old from the Italian city of Empoli, who has already collected more than 160,000 supporters on Facebook.

Because breaking the silence between us cannot be only stumbling on the fox tail…

Davide Reviati is comic author, painter and screenwriter born in Ravenna-Italy. He has found the favour with critics and readers with his last graphic novel MORTI DI SONNO (ed. Coconino Press) that describes the life of a group of kids grew up in the Villaggio Anic, a block of the city build for the people who worked in the nearby petrochemical. The sons of the workers spent their childhood in the shadow of the pollution of the factory, between the onset of the heroin and endless games of football.

Designers are invited to send in their design for a new symbol for Europe. 12 Submissions will be selected by an international jury and will be printed on flags. These flags will be shown during the first edition of Design and Government in 2010 in Den Haag and Berlin.
